Can You Refinish Custom Metal Products?

Custom metal fabrication makes for an excellent investment. However, you might be wondering if you will have the freedom to refinish or repaint your product down the road. At RC Industries, we are committed to providing you with an item that is 100% to your satisfaction, but we understand that you might want to make changes later. So, can you refinish our custom metal products, and if so, how? Let’s take a closer look.

How to Refinish Our Custom Toolboxes

The good news is that yes, you can refinish our custom toolboxes and other products. Typically, it is not necessary. If it is necessary, we cover damage that is our fault under our warranty. Otherwise, you can take the following steps on your own.

1. Sand the product down with the proper-grit sandpaper.

At RC Industries, we provide a heavy-duty powder coat in your choice of colors. If you prefer to change the color later, make sure you take time to sand down the exterior coating. Keep in mind that the powder coat does act as a protective barrier between your toolbox and the elements, so make sure to refinish custom metal with a protective coating as well.

2. Wipe down the product with a ketone-based thinner.

The ketone-based thinner helps thin epoxies and other adhesives, including what is left of your powder coat after sanding. Don’t skip this step. It prevents double layers of finishing, which makes your toolbox blotchy and uneven.

3. Dust and clean the product before applying additional paint or stain.

Additionally, it’s a good idea to go over your toolbox with a gentle cleanser to remove excess dust or grime from the sanding and thinning. Otherwise, the dust from the powder coat will get stuck underneath the finish and cause a gritty texture.

4. Always check to make sure that your paint of choice works on the material you are trying to refinish.

Not all paints are created equal, so give us a call if you aren’t sure that the paint you want to use is great for steel. Remember, if your toolbox is damaged or you need a refinishing for any reason other than simple cosmetics, consult our warranty.

Keep in mind that although we offer warranties, the results of additional and personal refinishing are completely out of our hands. As a result, our warranties do not cover refinished products, even if the item gets messed up in the refinishing process. So, make sure you proceed with caution!
